Despite being my last semester of law school, this is my busiest one yet.
The first three weeks of this semester have been NON-STOP, and I'm trying hard not to get overwhelmed... mostly by reminding myself that in 15.5 weeks, I'll be GRADUATING.
Praise the Good Lord!!!
As opposed to the typical law school classes where you can dick around all semester and then cram before the final (i.e. biz orgs last semester... didn't attend half the classes, never read, and busted my ass for a week before the final with some old kick ass outlines and got a B+), 3 of my 4 classes this semester have lots of assignments due throughout the semester instead of just a big final at the end. I usually prefer it this way (I do better on assignments than I do on finals!), but I am stressing this week!
My clinic is crazy busy... who knew there was so much working preparing a defense for a death penalty case?! (Just kidding... obviously I knew it was a lot of work. But really? Omg, there is a lot of work). I really enjoy my clinic and the work that I'm doing (aside from some of the students in it with me, but that's a whole 'nother can o worms), so I really don't mind it. I am also taking a writing-intensive drafting class, and a bar prep class that has lots of practice exams and questions.
In addition to all this I've been working 20+ hours a week at a firm, (I'm bored to tears, but ooooh boy do I love $), I joined Junior League, and I've been going through my volunteer training for CASA.
CASA usually won't take up as much time as it has during the last month - the training is INTENSE! (9-4 four Saturdays in a row and 3 hours of courtroom observations).
Add into all this an hour + at the gym 6 days a week and I am just plain worn out. I have 11 pounds to go in 15.5 weeks. Totally do-able, but no time for slacking!
This week and next are especially crazy... which is why I am SO SO SO excited that I am going to be in Hawaii in 1 week! I am probably going to sleep the entire time I will be so worn out. It will be a wonderful trip. (Don't worry, I'll be taking the laptop with me and will be doing work while I'm there, but I would much rather do work in Honolulu than Chicago in February!)
Hope everyone else is staying sane... I'm trying... although I might not be able to stay that way for long! Ahhh! :)
I am also a 3L and TOTALLY AGREE that my last semester is not turning out to be the easy peasy semester that people talk about all the time. I was ridiculous and took Secured, Crim Pro, and am doing an externship which is also a lot of work. You sound mega mega busy.
ReplyDeletedon't worry, it will all be over soon!! it sounds like you're doing awesome coping :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a helluva schedule, but you're in the home stretch, LF. On the flip side, you'll be enjoying Mai Tai's and Lava Flow's in the sunny south Pacific in less than a week. Stay the course:-)
ReplyDeleteI remember those days.
ReplyDeleteAre you going into public interest law? I always commend people for doing that. It was not for me, after getting EOPs for battered women pro bono. Also, I too enjoy money.
Keep treading water and you'll make it through! I'm extremely jealous of your trip. Take me with you!
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I know exactly how you feel, except your schedule is 10x crazier than mine was during my last semester! Congrats on new gig!
ReplyDeleteYou poor, poor sucker. My 3L year I took a bunch of junk classes (law and econ, law and behavioral econ, health law (pass/fail) feminist jurisprudence, cyber law, negotiations and ADR). The only real class was T&E.
ReplyDeleteAcross the street from the school was a bar with all drinks $4 for happy hour. I drank sooo many long island iced teas that year.
Ok - you're scaring me about 3L year! I thought I'm supposed to look forward to being bored to death next year? Good luck with everything!
ReplyDeleteIt's awesome that you're volunteering for CASA. I used to work at a CASA office and am now just a volunteer. I always wanted to get into law but chose teaching instead.
ReplyDeleteI am with you girl. I have the same type of classes for my last semester. I thought 3L yr was suppose to be FUN!!
ReplyDeleteI am exhausted just reading about what you are doing. I wish I had one tenth of your energy! Good luck with everything.
