Spring Break Accomplishments:

So I do plan on at least accomplishing a few things over break. Today I was not hungover (yay!), so I took the dog to the dog beach. It was a little chillier than I thought it was going to be, but we had a good time. I also did some laundry and some cleaning up around the condo, because it's seriously a disaster. I'm going to do some more tomorrow, so I can at least come home from break to a clean place.

Also on my agenda - applying for some jobs for this summer! My school sent out an opportunity that sounds pretty awesome that I am tooootalllyyyy interested in, and it comes with a $5,000 scholarship! I would totally kill to get it, but there are only 2 positions available, so I'm trying not to get my hopes up. I was talking to one of my good friends from school about what I should say in the cover letter to make myself stand out and sound like the perfect candidate (which I clearly am, I just have to get that point across). Here are some of the gems we came up with:

me: wtf do i say?
i mean i know how to write a generic cover letter
but how do i say i really really really want to be a prosecutor
Law School Dude: i would just talk about how you want to be a prosecutor and this would be a fantastic experience
me: yeah
and how do i address financial need?
"I'm broke."
haha
i mean everyone could use 5k
Law School Dude: right
me: maybe just say like i really want to get experience in the states attorneys office but since it's unpaid the 5g's would allow me to eat and live for the summer while gaining valuable experience?
Law School Dude: yes
me: christ almighty i really do want this job
Law School Dude: i would also downplay the fact that your parents subsidize you and your horse's home
me: well i wasn't going to mention that, duh
"even though i'm a kept woman and my parents pay for everything, i totally need 5G's"
that's a guaranteed winner.
Law School Dude: hahaha
"my trust fund has taken a real beating in this market"
Law School Dude: maybe say something along the lines of "while i was working at [old firm] I gained valuable insight into the legal system through my involvement in various civil matters. However, I never felt the passion for these assignments that I would feel if I was working on criminal matters"
and obviously make it sound like you did more at [old firm] than watch grey's and gchat w/ me
me: right
haha
i did
sometimes i took trips to the daley center!
Law School Dude: for financial aid mention the rising costs of tanning and tanning supplies,
the dean will love it
me: oooh yeah good one
Law School Dude: well for financial aid mention how "because criminal prosecution is my dream job, i would want to put my full effort into any position. however, i would not be able to take such a position without spreading myself too thin, by either seeking night time employment or attending summer classes so that i can obtain loan money"
me: "doggie daycare costs are rising, i need this scholly"
Law School Dude: "5k isn't even going to cover my vodka costs for the summer, please help"

SO anyway, this is obviously not entirely true... I'm just as broke as every other law student and could totally use the money. If I don't get it it's just more loans to take out so I can live (my parents do not pay for EVERYTHING, thank you!), but I don't even really care about that so much as I really need the experience so I have something relevant to criminal law on my resume so maybe some day I can actually get a job making bad guys go to jail. Wouldn't that just be swell?!

So, anyone have any great suggestions for how I can emphasize my desire to gain experience in criminal prosecution in a cover letter?! Feel free to shoot 'em my way!

  2. I worked for our county attorney last summer - unpaid. I would suggest that you convey the fact that you are very interested in the position and would love to learn more about criminal law, but because of financial concerns you would be unable to take an unpaid internship.

If, god forbid, you don't get this internship, I would suggest applying for internships with the prosecutor's office and the public defenders office. Do this by sending them your resume and a cover letter explaining how you would like to get some great experience over the summer. You could probably work it out so that you only work there part time, that way you could get a paying part time job as well!

Good luck! And PS, I'm super jealous that you have a great dane! I'm getting a dog as soon as I graduate law school and I have my hear set on a Bernese Mountain Dog!
